Third Thursday: The Tool & the Tool-Maker

Thursday, April 18, 2019

The Tool and the Tool-Maker: The Stories of Vermont Quaker Wheelwright Samuel Morison with Nora Rubinstein What stories do our tools tell about craft, culture and community? A spinning wheel bought at auction began a search for its maker. Five years later, a simple tool has become emblematic of a complex American story of the way women's and men's roles and identities were challenged by the Industrial Revolution. Nora Rubinstein will discuss the ways in which cultural change is revealed in the flax wheels and great wheels of this Vermont tool maker. Free & open to everyone. Nora Rubinstein studies the way people feel about the places they live, work, learn and heal. Trained in Environmental Psychology, she has spent nearly 40 years studying the manner in which we find places of belonging in our homes, communities and landscapes. Her current research on material culture focuses on the manner in which an object can teach and tell stories about the people who crafted and used it.
