Film Taking Root: The Vision of Wangari Maathai and discussion with Shawn White, Project Manager at Friends of the Winooski River

Wednesday, May 22, 2019

How do trees affect rain, rivers, soil quality, nutrition, climate and peace? Planting trees for fuel, shade, and food is not something that anyone would imagine as the first step toward winning the Nobel Peace Prize. But this is how Wangari Maathai won in 2004, by leading thousands of women in the Green Belt Movement of Kenya. These women planted 35 million trees, reclaimed their country’s land from a century of deforestation, and enabled families to feed their children healthier food. Join Shawn White for a viewing of the film, followed by a discussion about how planting trees in Montpelier can improve our rivers, soil quality and climate.
