Richard Moore: Urban Revision

Bright light in a cold time Richard Moore’s solo show at The Front in Montpelier, “Urban Revision,” features inkjet photographic prints on birchbark. The medium of birchbark—fragile, ephemeral, and textural—revises the planar photographic image, and how we might see our home places. “Sometimes it is like looking into the future," said Daryl Burtnett, another artist in the cooperative gallery, "with our familiar places aging and the natural world taking over. These tangible images change the way we see the world.” The show opens 4-7pm, January 6. The Front will be open Fridays 4-7, weekends 11-5, and by appointment through the month of January. There will also be an artist’s talk in the gallery January 12, 6.30-7.30, and a poetry reading with local guest poets January 19, 6.30-7.30. Celebrate the beginning of winter at the State House Lawn Skating Rink! Enjoy food, hot cocoa, music, and skating. The Recreation Department is supplying skates to borrow on-site, all are welcome to join! This event is also supported by the Montpelier Roxbury Public Schools Partners in Education (MRPS PIE) and the Vermont Youth Service Bureau. The Montpelier outdoor skating rink is operated by the city of Montpelier, and provides people with free open skating any day of the week. Enjoy a day of shopping, ice skating under the Golden Dome, followed by a hot meal at a local restaurant!

Having trouble getting around and being confused are the most common problems affecting comfort and happiness for aging dogs and cats. But pet caregivers don’t always know how to understand what’s happening, or what we can do about it. This talk will help! We’ll also learn to work with the JOURNEYS quality of life scale, a helpful tool to approach the difficult question that’s on everyone’s mind at this life stage—but it’s so hard to go there. You are not alone; we’ll go there together, and the tears will be leavened with humor and love. A veterinarian in the Montpelier area since 2002, Dr. Erika Bruner currently focuses on improving quality of life for elderly animals and their caregivers. She is a certified veterinary acupuncturist and makes housecalls for end-of-life consultations and euthanasia throughout central Vermont. This is a free, in-person program at the Kellogg-Hubbard Library.

Capital City Concerts presents Folks Meets Classical – a free family concert on Saturday afternoon January 28 at 1PM in collaboration with the Unitarian Church of Montpelier. Mother and son musicians flutist Karen Kevra and violinist Owen Kevra-Lenz have shared a life in music since Owen was a wee lad. In the decades that followed, Karen won a Grammy nomination and established Montpelier's popular Capital City Concerts, while Owen earned a degree in violin performance and got to work with legends like Gil Shaham, and Joseph Silverstein. Their fun and eclectic program will span the globe with folk and classical works including Katherine Hoover's desert Southwest-style Winter Spirits, Ray Chen's Waltzing Matilda variations, a haunting arrangement of Simple Gifts, a set of Sarabandes by JS Bach, and more.
