Craft Circle at NBNC
6:30pm-8:30pm Craft Circle at NBNCWe are starting a monthly craft circle inspired by the Wool and Water exhibit and workshop series that we hosted last fall. Come craft with us, share what you’re working on, and enjoy each other’s company! Our next gathering is scheduled for Tuesday, March 11 at NBNC, and we plan to meet monthly on the second Tuesday of each month if there is enough interest. We’ll provide space, tea, and organization by our volunteer leader Angela Shambaugh, you bring your own project to work on (minimally messy projects only please) and any supplies you’ll need. We’ll also have some local climate data sets available if you’re interested in starting a data art project inspired by Wool and Water. This is just an option, you’re welcome to work on anything you like and we won’t be leading or teaching a specific data-related project.

Amphibian Road Crossing Program – Ecology & Training Night (Virtual)
6:30pm-8:00pm Amphibian Road Crossing Program – Ecology & Training Night (Virtual)Join North Branch Nature Center scientists to learn about our Amphibian Road Crossing program, and find out how you can help Vermont’s frogs and salamanders safely cross the road during their annual spring movements. This community science project accommodates volunteers of all ages and backgrounds — the only requirement is an eagerness to enjoy and protect our local amphibians! Each spring, amphibians migrate by the millions from upland forests to wetland breeding grounds, often crossing roadways at their peril. NBNC’s ARC program trains volunteers to survey migration sites to help amphibians across the road while collecting valuable data that informs local conservation and transportation planning efforts. Over the last five years, NBNC volunteers conducted over 1,000 surveys and documented 20,000 salamanders at over 200 crossing sites across Vermont. Did you know that Spotted Salamanders live underground in mouse tunnels? Did you know that Four-toed Salamanders guard their eggs? Did you know that Red Efts spend years traveling across the forest floor in search of the perfect breeding habitat? Virtual via Zoom.

Book Launch: Life Became Very Blurry
7:00pm-8:30pm Book Launch: Life Became Very BlurryJoin VHS at Bear Pond Books in Montpelier for the launch of our next book, Life Became Very Blurry: An Oral History of COVID-19 in Vermont, edited by Garrett M. Graff. In March 2020, the arrival of the SARS-CoV-2 virus prompted Vermont state officials to order a two-week lockdown to attempt to slow the spread of the illness. It was the start of a years-long response to the global COVID-19 pandemic that upended the world. Vermont’s response to the pandemic was widely recognized, and realizing the historic significance of the outbreak, the Vermont Historical Society launched a project to document its impact. By collecting more than a hundred oral histories from state officials, doctors, and citizens, the project captured the consequences and influence the pandemic had on the Green Mountain State. Life Became Very Blurry: An Oral History of COVID-19 In Vermont builds on that project. Edited by bestselling author and Pulitzer Prize finalist Garrett M. Graff, it compiles those oral histories into a comprehensive narrative of the pandemic in Vermont from the first lockdowns in March 2020 through the tumultuous years that followed.
