A Hometown Tradition:
Capitol Stationers Celebrates 75 Years
When Capitol Stationers first opened its doors in 1950, downtown Montpelier (and the world) looked quite different. But one thing that hasn’t changed is the steady presence of a Bigglestone behind the counter.
Today, owner Eric Bigglestone is proudly carrying on the family tradition. As the shop celebrates its 75th anniversary, Eric reflects on the journey: “It has not been an easy road to 75, but I am proud to say we made it!”
So, what’s the secret to lasting seven and a half decades in a small downtown? According to Eric, it comes down to commitment, adaptability, and community. “You have to be able to change with the times,” he explains. Capitol Stationers has done just that, shifting from a traditional office supply store to a go-to destination for unique gifts, Vermont products, and clothing. “We do very well with t-shirts and sweatshirts,” Eric notes. “It’s definitely not indicative of our name!”
Despite the changes in merchandise, Capitol Stationers still thrives on personal connection. Greeting cards are a best-seller, and Eric still loves being on the sales floor. “Helping folks and talking with tourists, it’s the best part of the job,” he says.
The 2023 flood underscored just how strong Montpelier’s community is. “To see it in motion was incredible,” Eric recalls. “The business owner community here is like family, we all look out for each other.”
And that sense of connection extends across generations. “I get a kick out of seeing folks come in with their young kids,” Eric says. “The same folks who were little kids themselves when they came in with their parents. That’s when you know you’re doing something right.”
