How did you get started with antiques and start up J. Langdon Antiques?

I’ve always loved history and I’ve always loved antiques. My mom started my interest as she was the first person in my life to save a piece of furniture from being thrown away.  She would sand, fix and paint until it was ready to be enjoyed again. When I moved to Vermont, I visited mini barn sales and auctions which got me even more passionate about antiques. I got advice from an antique dealer who told me to pick one thing and be an expert on that. I chose antique furniture.

I first opened the shop in Warren, Vermont in 1994 and not long after that I met my husband Simon, who shared a passion for antiques. We opened J. Langdon on Langdon Street in 2016. We chose the name J. Langdon from James Langdon, forefather of Montpelier, who built the beautiful brick and mortar building where we are located. Our store sells mid-century modern furniture, antiques, art, local Vermont jewelry, leather belts and so much more. Plus our inventory changes daily. We love selling antiques as they all have history, our well-made antiques are the ultimate recycling.

The business model of an antique store is so different and I love that it’s different. We know where everything is from and its backstory. We travel all over Vermont, New Hampshire, and in Canada to estate sales and auctions, we also buy from individuals. While we have customers from far away, it’s our local customers who support us so much and we’re so thankful for their support bringing us back after the flood.

What do you like about having a store in Montpelier?

When you’re in a small town you’re so connected.  You see and know everyone, even moreso after the flood. The flood bonded us to this community. I feel like we’re like a little family that really lifts each other out and helps all the time. I was born in Houston, Texas, the big city where you wouldn’t get to see the mayor the governor. This isn’t the case in Montpelier. You can really be a part of change and I love having my store here. We also love our store location on historic Langdon Street, especially being right next-door to the world’s most amazing vintage clothing store The Get Up, and Buch Spieler Records, an amazing vinyl shop.
