Member Highlight: Sharon Estes Whyte of Althea’s Attic
When did you open Althea's Attic and where does the name come from?
Althea’s Attic started 25 years ago as a pop up in my living room in Cape Elizabeth Maine. I invited other local artisans to join me and soon after I took the “show on the road” popping up all over New England. This was my “side hustle”, always working a full time gig as I manifested my dream. We became a brick & mortar boutique officially amidst the pandemic on October 31st, 2020.
The Name is inspired by the Grateful Dead song “Althea” I loved the name and was inspired by the lyrics, “Althea” often noted as having “healing power.” I had hoped to give my first born daughter the name Althea Rose, suffice to say, my baby became the Store.
Althea's Attic carries so many different items, including consignment. Tell us a bit about the range of offerings in your store and some unique items you sell.
Yet another reference to the song, relevant to many listeners. I think it is something of a mistake to reduce any song, even one as poignant and possibly pointed as “Althea” to anything quite so specific. In short I wanted to offer something to every shopper or stopper by. We are if anything an “Experience” with an eclectic mix of art, gift & treasure. Our 3200’ ft space is about 3/4 consignment which allows me to curate one of a kind finds, to wear, display or a gift for yourself or someone dear. We support the local artisan and are known for carrying Salaam Clothing, Max Razy & Jennifer Kahn to name just a few.
