Virtual Speaker Series: "Vermont for the Vermonters" The History of Eugenics in The Green Mountain State

12:00pm-1:00pm Virtual Speaker Series: "Vermont for the Vermonters" The History of Eugenics in The Green Mountain State

In VHS’s most recent publication, “Vermont for the Vermonters”: The History of Eugenics in the Green Mountain State, Mercedes de Guardiola examines how the state’s eugenics movement emerged out of the public policies of the nineteenth century and led to state-sanctioned programs of institutionalization, sterilization, family separation, and education aimed at the most vulnerable Vermonters. Exploring the social and political legacy of the movement, de Guardiola brings new scholarship and context to one of Vermont’s darkest chapters. Mercedes de Guardiola is a New York-based historian. She earned her B.A. from Dartmouth College with a double major in History and Art History. A leading expert on Vermont's eugenics movement, she testified before the state legislature during hearings in the 2020s. Her research examines public policies of child health and welfare, mass institutionalization and deinstitutionalization, sterilization, and family separation. Mercedes works in open innovation consulting at Luminary Labs for clients including NASA, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Steven & Alexandra Cohen Foundation, and the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency.?

Floodplains & Watersheds Field Workshop

10:00am-12:00pm Floodplains & Watersheds Field Workshop

Floodplain Encounter – A Field Outing & Workshop at NBNC Saturday, November 11 | 10 to noon FREE | RSVP Requested at https://northbranchnaturecenter.org/event/floodplain-encounters/ Join river and floodplain expert Ned Swanberg on an exploration of the (usually) hidden expressions of the North Branch River on this fall walk here at NBNC. How does our rain and river shape the valley? Why and where does it flood? How does flooding support clean water and build soil in the watershed? Why are functional floodplains important to the safety and wellbeing of our neighbors? We will look at riverside soils, plants, and other signs to discern the shapes and power of water in our lives. RSVP at https://northbranchnaturecenter.org/event/floodplain-encounters/ Ned Swanberg is a naturalist who explores the relationships between people and rivers. He has lived and led discoveries along the Housatonic, Little Miami, Cold, Connecticut, Ottauquechee, White, and Winooski Rivers. Abenaki Harvest School

10:30am-3:30pm Abenaki Harvest School

This workshop with Dr. Frederick Wiseman focuses on the harvest; including the crops that will be harvested, specialized Indigenous equipment such as harvest knives and baskets, sieves and winnowers; as well as techniques such as braiding and stringing corn for drying it, preparing and drying sunflowers, etc. We also focus on the Harvest Ceremony, storage of the harvest, and seed saving. Indigenous foodstuffs in diet, food security, and native sovereignty will also be discussed. $10 VHS Members / $20 Non-Members. Free for Abenaki tribal citizens. Dr. Wiseman was trained as a Paleoethnobotanist at the University of Arizona. After serving in the Department of Geography and Anthropology at Louisiana State University and MIT Center for Materials Research in Archaeology and Ethnology, he returned to his Vermont roots to teach and do research at Johnson State College until his retirement in 2014. Since 1987, he has focused on the Indigenous Wabanaki people of the far Northeast. Since 2009, Wiseman has worked with Indigenous groups in New England, Quebec, and the Mid-Atlantic to re-configure an almost lost Northeastern agricultural and forest landscape heritage. Wiseman teaches ceremonial craft arts, song, dance, and ceremony as important in crop nurture as sun, rain and fertile soil. He has also recovered significant numbers of ancestral recipes to help in reviving a lapsed regional Indigenous cuisine. His research into Wabanaki and Chesapeake Bay area food systems is detailed in his recent book The Seven Sisters: Ancient Seeds and Food Systems of the Wabanaki People (Earth Haven, 2018). He was instrumental in the research and political advocacy that led to four Vermont Indigenous bands being recognized by the state of Vermont, for which he was awarded the first Lifetime Achievement Award by the Vermont Abenaki Artists Association.

Exploring the social and political legacy of the movement, de Guardiola brings new scholarship and context to one of Vermont’s darkest chapters.

Grief Over the Holidays

Monday Nov 13th 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm
@ Kellogg-Hubbard Library

The holiday season can be challenging when we are grieving. There is an expectation that we need to host friends and loved ones, attend gatherings, and feel joyful. Grief, however, has its own agenda, especially at this time of the year. Let’s come together to share how we really feel about the holidays this year. We will explore healthy coping techniques and methods for setting clear boundaries with ourselves, our friends, and our loved ones. Led by Diana Moore, MA, Bereavement Coordinator at Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice. This is a free, in-person program at the Kellogg-Hubbard Library in the Hayes Room.
