Poet Keiselim (Keysi) Montás discusses how to read the traditional Japanese poetic form of haiku, illustrated with works from his haiku collection, Like Water. This is a First Wednesdays program. Keysi moved to the Upper Valley in 2007 to work for Dartmouth College's Department of Safety and Security, where he currently serves as director. He has published five poetry books, two collections of short stories, and two collections of essays.

On Friday, April 7th, VNRC is hosting an opening reception for Gretchen Alexander, our Artist in Residence from April through June 2023. Alexander’s exhibit, “Fantastic Floodplains”, is a collection of watercolor and acrylic paintings that highlight the importance and beauty of floodplains. Bridging science and art, the show is inspired by Alexander’s long career as a river ecologist. Doors will be open to the public from 4:00 to 8:00 pm to coincide with Montpelier Art Walk. Come visit the Center for Arts and Learning. The Voice & Vision Art & Poetry Display will be featured for the entire month of April and there will be an all-day Drop-In Writing Space on April 10th. At 1 PM that day, Samn Stockwell will lead a "4 Poems 4 Prompts" Workshop. This will be like doing short sketches, except with pen instead of charcoal. Samn will introduce a poem and the prompt based on the poem. Workshop participants will have a short amount of time to write from the prompt and then repeat this process until with 4 prompts for 4 poems. Solaris Vocal Ensemble is excited to present Deep River – A Spiritual Journey, a program of stirring spirituals and folk songs that reflect heartfelt longing, love, and joy. These concerts will highlight beloved spiritual arrangements by Andre Thomas, Jacqueline Hairston, Udine Moore, Robert DeCormier and more as well as brilliant settings of early American folk hymns by Mack Wilberg. Solaris is thrilled to welcome back as guest artist, saxophonist Clayton Hamilton. Clayton, currently the Band Director at Burlington High School, has performed with the Burlington Civic Orchestra and been guest soloist with the Houghton College Chamber Orchestra. Clayton will perform several moving arrangements with the choir as well as perform a set of reflections on English folksongs for saxophone by Ralph Vaughan Williams. Capital City Concerts presents the season finale: Magnificent Masterpieces, a concert led by violinist Laurie Smukler on Saturday, April 15 at 7:30 PM at the Unitarian Church of Montpelier. Laurie Smukler is on the faculty of the Juilliard School, and is one the country's most sought-after chamber musicians and a crowd favorite at Capital City Concerts. The concert will include Brahms' Clarinet Quintet in B Minor, Mozart's Flute Quartet in D Major, and the rich folk-heritage inspired 5th String Quartet of Mieczys?aw Weinberg. Rajnii will speak his poems from Their Names Are Mine, In The Coded Language Of This Mortal Tongue, among others; and engage in a Q&A discussion with community members in the audience. Originally from Seattle Washington, Spoken Word Poet/ Emcee and Teaching Artist Rajnii Eddins has been engaging diverse community audiences for over 27 years. He was the youngest member of the Afrikan American Writers Alliance at age 11 and has been actively sharing with youth and community in Vermont since 2010. His work Their Names Are Mine aims to confront white supremacy while emphasizing the need to affirm our mutual humanity. The 20th and 21st century composers include Claude Debussy, Florence Price, Daniel Dorff, Augusta Read Thomas, Lowell Liebermann and Vermont composer David Gunn, whose “The Boy Who Raced His Shadow” will be premiered. The concerts will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 22, at the Unitarian Church of Montpelier, and 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 23, at the Waterbury Congregational Church (8 North Main Street). Vermont Poetry Slam Champion Geof Hewitt hosts this "Anything Goes" Slam where poets, acoustic musicians, jugglers, and anyone else with special talents are invited to take 3 minutes (or less) on stage in an attempt to wow the judges (and the audience) for enormous glory and modest prizes. This Slam will feature two-rounds with the said 3-minute time limit for writers and performers! Make it through the first to get to the second!
