Marjorie Kramer

4:00pm-5:00pm Marjorie Kramer

Press Release Art Exhibit Contact: Marjorie Kramer, [email protected] [email protected] “Marjorie Kramer - Paintings” The Front, 6 Barre Street, Montpelier VT September 1-October 1, 2023 Gallery Hours: Friday 4-7, Saturday and Sunday 11-5 Opening Reception: Friday September 1, 4-7 PM Poetry Reading: Thursday September 7, 6-8:30 Artist's Talk: September 21, 6-7 PM Presented in collaboration and solidarity with the Susan Calza Gallery and Hexum Gallery in downtown Montpelier. For most of her life, Marjorie Kramer has been a Vermonter, but her artistic career began in New York City in the 60s and 70s. She has a BFA from Cooper Union Art School, where she met her husband, the sculptor and painter Samuel Thurston. For more than a decade they lived and worked in New York but spent their summers at their home in Lowell, Vermont. Today, sitting in the old farmhouse up high in Lowell, Marjorie looks more like a Vermont painter spending time in New York when possible. Many of the portraits in her show at The Front reflect her history of advocacy for women painters and cooperative galleries. (Her favorite show was the First Open Show of Feminist Art at MUSEUM in 1971—“free, non-curated, fabulous!”) The landscapes in her show at The Front are pure Vermont. Marjorie was a student founder of the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting, and Sculpture. She has a very long list of solo and group shows from New York City through New England and beyond and has taught students at Johnson State University and Vermont Community College as well as art programs in small Vermont elementary schools. Her work has been called “plucky and lyrical,” with a “delicate sense of touch,” and “remarkable neomodernist observational rigor.” Painting, teaching, organizing; summers in Vermont, building a house, having a child. “It was all great fun,”she says. “I painted most days through all this.”

Montpelier Fall Festival 2023

12:00am-4:00pm Montpelier Fall Festival 2023

The Montpelier Fall Festival is a celebration of community!! We celebrate the resilience and vibrancy of Montpelier and particularly its youth!! Come participate in our Fun run, enjoy fun music, delicious food trucks, games, music (The Radiance!!!), and thanks to our partner, All Brains Belong, connect with community organizations! Any funds raised at this event support interactive, real life experiences outside of our school community that deeply connect to learning; internships, athletics, author/artist residencies, community service, and dozens of other amazing opportunities at all four schools. In 2021 and 2022, MRPS PIE also contributed to the growing district wide need for mental health services for kids, their families, and our staff. We hope to build on that support next school year. More importantly, the funds level the playing field for families that may not be able to afford to buy their athlete a state championship jacket, send their child on a cultural/language trip to Canada or to a music festival, experience the Montshire Science Museum, visit Boston's Old Ironsides or allow parents the funds to cover fees to get the needed background check in order to chaperone a field trip. We look forward to seeing you there!

Attic of Dreams Book Talk with author Marilyn Neagley

1:00pm-2:30pm Attic of Dreams Book Talk with author Marilyn Neagley

Author Marilyn Neagley will come to Montpelier to discuss her new memoir, Attic of Dreams. The book talk will occur on Thursday, October 12th from 1-2:30pm at the Montpelier Senior Activity Center. See below for more details on the book, and go to Rootstock Publishing to purchase and read the book ahead of the talk! A lyrical memoir that begins in a quiet Vermont village with Marilyn’s memories of her parents, owners of a popular restaurant and lively night spot next to their home. While her mother disappears into addiction, Marilyn grapples with feelings of abandonment, though she recalls being uplifted by the village, by her dreams, and by the kindness of others. In young adulthood, she lands on a beautiful estate known as Shelburne Farms, where she helps to launch valuable movements for the region: local food and farmers’ markets, outdoor childhood education, and the stewardship of natural resources. But her work is not without cost to her personal life. She discovers that her interest in protecting the outer world begins to heal her inner self. The two are deeply intertwined. Attic of Dreams examines family dysfunction while humor counters tragedy, and forgiveness counters blame. Trust and love emerge as the journey home to wholeness continues.
