Marjorie Kramer

Friday Sep 1st 4:00 pm - Sunday Oct 1st 5:00 pm
@ The Front, 6 Barre St., Montpelier

Press Release Art Exhibit Contact: Marjorie Kramer, [email protected] [email protected] “Marjorie Kramer - Paintings” The Front, 6 Barre Street, Montpelier VT September 1-October 1, 2023 Gallery Hours: Friday 4-7, Saturday and Sunday 11-5 Opening Reception: Friday September 1, 4-7 PM Poetry Reading: Thursday September 7, 6-8:30 Artist's Talk: September 21, 6-7 PM Presented in collaboration and solidarity with the Susan Calza Gallery and Hexum Gallery in downtown Montpelier. For most of her life, Marjorie Kramer has been a Vermonter, but her artistic career began in New York City in the 60s and 70s. She has a BFA from Cooper Union Art School, where she met her husband, the sculptor and painter Samuel Thurston. For more than a decade they lived and worked in New York but spent their summers at their home in Lowell, Vermont. Today, sitting in the old farmhouse up high in Lowell, Marjorie looks more like a Vermont painter spending time in New York when possible. Many of the portraits in her show at The Front reflect her history of advocacy for women painters and cooperative galleries. (Her favorite show was the First Open Show of Feminist Art at MUSEUM in 1971—“free, non-curated, fabulous!”) The landscapes in her show at The Front are pure Vermont. Marjorie was a student founder of the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting, and Sculpture. She has a very long list of solo and group shows from New York City through New England and beyond and has taught students at Johnson State University and Vermont Community College as well as art programs in small Vermont elementary schools. Her work has been called “plucky and lyrical,” with a “delicate sense of touch,” and “remarkable neomodernist observational rigor.” Painting, teaching, organizing; summers in Vermont, building a house, having a child. “It was all great fun,”she says. “I painted most days through all this.”

Inside Out: IncARceraTion at T.W.Wood Gallery

Friday Sep 1st 12:00 pm - Friday Sep 22nd 4:00 pm
@ CENTER FOR ARTS AND LEARNING ?46 BARRE STREET, MONTPELIER, VT 05602

Nuquist and Contemporary Hall Galleries: Inside Out: IncARceraTion Inside--->OUT : incARceraTion” is a traveling collaborative project between incarcerated Artists in the WV Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation and Goddard College student Reentry Advocates exploring the intersections between trauma, addiction, incarceration, and reentry. Leonard Cohen once said, “There is a crack in everything. That is how the light gets in.” Inside--->OUT:IncARceraTion explores the humanity of incarcerated individuals and meaningfully considers the reality of their journeys to become whole and healthy individuals, using their abilities to put good into the world, even while being excluded from it. The work considers how trauma, addiction, and incarceration can all be forms of imprisonment. The works hold in tension the realities of the incarcerated artist's self-reflection on childhood trauma, addiction, and rehabilitation amid exclusion. At the same time, space is created for the community to consider what successful reentry and community restoration might look like and how "the light" can seep in to help heal what has been broken. In West Virginia, 1 out of 10 children have an incarcerated parent. The WV Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation held 41,575 inmates and released 38,767 back into our community in 2021. The full exhibit will be on tour in West Virginia, engaging communities in conversations and education regarding reentry, recovery, and community resilience. "Inside---> OUT” is an invitation to enter into the world and culture of those who are so often excluded, not only from physical structures or spaces but society as well. The “Inside--->OUT” installation was developed to create community conversations and collaborative creativity around issues of poverty, homelessness, mental health, incarceration, and reentry. *** The T.W. Wood Gallery: A Museum of American Art was founded in 1895 by Montpelier native and 19th-century master artist Thomas Waterman Wood. One of the oldest art museums in Vermont, its mission is to preserve our local artistic heritage and to bring the best of today’s art to Central Vermont. The T.W. Wood Gallery’s permanent collection consists of works by T.W. Wood and his contemporaries and artworks from the Works Progress Administration (WPA) era. The Gallery also has two contemporary exhibit spaces, The Nuquist Gallery and the Contemporary Hall, that exhibit the work of regional artists. Located at 46 Barre Street, the Gallery is a short walk from the shops and galleries in downtown Montpelier. For more information visit twwoodgallery.org. Foundations of Connection & Recovery

Wednesday Sep 13th 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm
@ Zoom

Throughout this summer, Montpelier and neighboring communities have faced many challenges. Often when we are in the midst of difficulty, we forget to pause to take care of ourselves. This class will encourage you to pause to take meaningful care of you. We will begin the session with a writing exercise to release anything you’ve been needing to express. The remainder of class will be dedicated to taking time to be still through guided meditation and restorative yoga. Due to damage the library endured this summer, we will gather for this event virtually. To create a sense of community, we kindly ask that you keep your cameras turned on throughout the event. Some items to have nearby during the workshop are a notebook/journal, pen/pencil, yoga mat/towel, pillows & blanket, and water bottle. Led by Kristen Miranda, registered yoga teacher and wellness coach. Register for this Zoom workshop at https://www.kellogghubbard.org/adult-programs. Email Kristen at [email protected] with any questions.

Homeslice Reading

Wednesday Sep 27th 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm
@ Zoom

Dayton J. Shafer’s Homeslice is a regaling, a rhapsodizing on a singular swath of millennialhood—the ’81-’85 babies, the elders. Part document, part performance, part poetry, these call-and-response nonfiction monologues address and deconstruct the turn of the millennium’s most repressed issues—privilege and enabling, communal trauma, cognitive dissonance, evolving masculinity, artistic portraits, and fallen idols. Framed with the interactive rhetorical refrain: Is Your American Dream—, each monologue casts the reader as a chorus member in the meaning-making process—asking him to examine directly how the American individual can be a citizen of both society and self. Register for this Zoom program at https://www.kellogghubbard.org/adult-programs. DAYTON J. SHAFER’s pieces have been featured in fringe festivals, barns, abandoned factories, converted laundromats, black boxes, street sides, and with Vermont Public Radio, the Susan Calza Gallery, PoemCity, and Split Lip Magazine. He’s a former writing fellow at Vermont Studio Center, managing editor of Hunger Mountain Literary Journal, and grant recipient from the Montpelier Public Arts Commission.

Connection & Recovery

Saturday Sep 30th 10:30 am to 12:00 pm

NBNC Trails Grand Opening Celebration

Saturday Sep 30th 11:00 am to 12:00 pm
@ North Branch Nature Center

Please join us for the grand opening of our new Universal Access Trail and even-newer Nature Connection Trail! We will gather at 11 am for a ribbon-cutting and refreshments, and then invite folks to explore at their own pace, with staff-led activities to enjoy along the way. The Universal Access Trail: This new ADA-compliant trail was completed in August. Originating at the parking lot trailhead pavilion, this trail meanders around the meadows and Community Garden in a loop with beautiful views and excellent access to nature and wildlife watching. The Nature Connection Trail: This installation of 8 interpretive panels spans the whole trail network and invites visitors to immerse in nature in fun and diverse ways. Featuring large watercolor paintings by Amy Hook-Therrian, the Nature Connection Trail adds beautiful artwork and engaging activities to the NBNC paths. For more information about our trails, including surface, grade, length, accessibility, and accommodations, please visit our trails page.
