Piano Classics and Treasures

Sunday Mar 5th 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm
@ Christ Church 64 State Street Montpelier

In the third of a series of concerts featuring the newly-acquired Yamaha grand piano in the historic sanctuary of Christ Church in Montpelier, pianists Michael Sitton and Stephen Brown present music for 4-hand duet and solo piano. Admission is free, but a basket will be out for donations to the piano fund. Each half of the program begins with works for piano duet, Poulenc’s Sonata and the energetic Hungarian Dance by Brahms. The popularity of the piano duet coincided with the availability of mass-produced instruments and the common practice of making music at home with friends and family. Brahms used the popular dances of Hungary while Poulenc’s sonata is more percussive and dissonant. Each pianist has solo piano offerings: Sitton with the B Minor sonata of Haydn, Debussy's three-movement second set of Images and descriptive works by Lili Boulanger and Florence Price. Stephen Brown plays the Toccata from Bach's E minor Partita, Beethoven’s Op 90 sonata and the Brahms' virtuosic first book of Variations on a Theme of Paganini. Extensive notes in the program offer insight into the historical context and the music itself. Michael Sitton retired from his position as the Dean of Music of the Crane School in Potsdam, New York, and with his husband made his home in Barre. Holding the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in piano from the University of Illinois, he has joined the affiliate faculty of Montpelier’s Monteverdi Music School and is active in the musical community. Stephen Brown earned a bachelor’s and master’s degrees in piano performance at the Cincinnati Conservatory, winning the first prize in the undergraduate piano competition. After attending Cornell Law School and practicing law in Georgia, he moved to Montpelier in 2018, serving with a position in state government. Throughout his career, Stephen has continued to compose and to play music. Other events celebrating the new piano feature Sylvia Parker with a musical tour of easter Europe with Bela Bartok, Eliza Thomas with Bach and other Baroque composers, and others. A “Piano Palooza” is planned for the spring, as well as the annual Bach Birthday Organ Marathon. For further information, www.christchurchvt.org Or email [email protected] Or call 802 223 3631

Sunday Mar 26th 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm
@ Plainfield Opera House

Plainfield Arts (Friends of the Plainfield Opera House) presents the third event in their winter/spring series: The French Connection-Music for Flute and Piano featuring Karen Kevra and Jeffrey Chappell Sunday, March 26 at 4 pm ?Flutist Karen Kevra, Grammy nominee and the leading protege of the late Louis Moyse, and internationally renowned pianist Jeffrey Chappell met in 2000 when Michael Arnowitt "assigned" them to perform together at his Millennium Music Festival. They bonded instantly, both musically and personally and have been duo partners ever since. Together they have performed at the French Embassy in Washington D.C., as headliners at the National Flute Association Convention, and at venues up and down the east coast from Vermont, to Boston, to Key West. Their acclaimed CD Romantic Music for Flute and Piano has won widespread accolades from flutist Sir James Galway, and from the Boston Musical Intelligencer for "sublimely satisfying flute-playing." Their hour-long program will include Jules Mouquet's, La Flûte de Pan,  François-Joseph Gossec's Tambourin, Gabriel Fauré's Valse-Caprice No. 1 in A major, Op. 30 for solo piano, Georges Bizet/François Borne's Carmen Fantasy, Maurice Ravel's Pièce en forme de Habanera, and Louis Moyse's  Introduction, Theme, and Variations (on a Japanese chant). Their colorful program includes high-wire virtuoso pieces, showpieces, and a spell-binding work by Kevra's mentor Louis Moyse. This concert is sure to please audience members of all ages. Here's a link to a performance by Karen Kevra and Jeffrey Chappell from their acclaimed recording Romantic Music for Flute and Piano: https://youtu.be/nQF0Qobo8Y4 Karen Kevra has won attention as one of the country's outstanding flutists through her distinctive warm and extroverted performances and has been hailed as "having a musical focus and depth seen in few flutists anywhere." She has shared the stage with members of the Emerson String Quartet, the Paris Piano Trio, Borromeo String Quartet, Boston Chamber Music Society, and Trey Anastasio of Phish. Kevra is founder and artistic director of Montpelier's popular Capital City Concerts, and is the creator and host of the Muse Mentors podcast. She recently joined the music department of Middlebury College where she teaches flute. Jeffrey Chappell first gained national attention at the age of 24 by substituting for Claudio Arrau on four hours’ notice without rehearsal, performing the Brahms Second Concerto with the Baltimore Symphony to critical acclaim. Now a seasoned veteran of the concert stage, he has appeared throughout the United States in recital and with major symphony orchestras such as those of Philadelphia, St. Louis, Houston, Pittsburgh, and Indianapolis, collaborating with conductors including Catherine Comet, Sergiu Comissiona, Leon Fleisher, and Davin Zinman. He has appeared at Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, The Kennedy Center, and Wolf Trap Park and is a recording artist on multiple labels.
